Upgrades to items are a common and crucial method to enhance the performance of a variety of items in Path of Exile. They can be a great source of damage and more AD or even more attachments.

Rare-grade equipment is often superior to upgraded Common or Magic equipment because of their high requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades are a form of upgrade that can be applied to weapon and armor items. They increase the stats of whatever item they are connected to. Armor upgrades are available in the world of the game and purchased from Blacksmiths on bonfires. Alternately, they can be rescued from items with upgrade item components inside them, with a professional or higher salvage kit.

The level of an armor's or weapon's upgrade determines the amount of damage it can take on. The upgrade of an armor piece to maximum upgrade level will increase the damage it absorbs. It is important to keep in mind that this will increase the weight of the armor, which means it must be more heavy.

There are several types of armor upgrades that are available in the game and they all have distinct effects. Some upgrades give armor a greater amount of health points while others make it stronger and lighter. The type of armor upgrade that an item will receive is indicated by the name of the upgrade, as shown in the table below.

Certain upgrades require magic or a combination of technology and magic, which is identified by the "Magic" and "Hybrids" entries in the table below. Certain upgrades also require fees to use. These are indicated as "Charges" entries in the table. These charges are constantly updated or never expire depending on the upgrade.

Iron Ore is the cheapest method to upgrade your armor. It can be found by exploring and looting small chests. Titanium is more expensive however, it is available at the smelters in Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Certain upgrades, such as the Reforge and the Hot Potato Books, can only be applied to high level armor pieces. These upgrades can provide significant improvement in stats and are worth the cost, especially for single-handed weapons.

Upgrading a piece of armor to the highest upgrade level will significantly boost its defense, but the player should be aware that putting on weight will drastically reduce its speed and agility. It is not recommended to upgrade items armor above +9. The defensive boost gained usually isn't worth the weight and power expenses of the upgrades.

Weapons

Weapon upgrades let players increase the effectiveness of specific aspects of a weapon. For example, an upgrade may increase the damage dealt by the shells of a shotgun or the accuracy of the rifle sniper. Some weapons have special enhancements to enhance their intrinsic capabilities. Frictionless materials (improves stability, and reduces the risk of overheating) and Kinetic coils (increases the projectile's speed to cause morelized in the armor's sockets and weapons, enhancing the power of a character and bringing about secondary effects. They can be created through the process of jewelry crafting, where you combine a gem with a number of specific ingredients at a table for jewelry. The higher the level of the gem has, the more powerful its secondary effect. These reagents can be obtained from Treasure Goblins and World Bosses around the world, or by collecting Legendary Gear. You can also buy them from The Jeweler in exchange for gold and Scattered Prisms.

The Jeweler can boost the quality of the gem in stages that range from Crude up to Royal. Depending on the tier of the gem, it will provide a different stat boost when slotted into weapons, equipment and jewelry.

The Jeweler is able to create all kinds of gems, with the exception of rare and legendary ones that you must be at an appropriate level to obtain. In contrast to other upgrade components, jewels can be swapped with a identical jewel without destroying it. However, you can only replace a jewel in an equipment piece only once.

Using more jewels in a movement will make it feel smoother, and is often done for aesthetic reasons. In addition to improving performance, the jewels create an outer layer that is more durable than metal, which means that repeated friction from pivots won't cause damage as easily.

A Glyphmaster can provide glyphs to enhance the appearance of your shields and weapons. They offer a small benefit and are able to be swapped easily but aren't guaranteed to drop as loot. Glyphs, just like jewelry, can be upgraded at the Jeweler in exchange for Scattered Crystals and gold. Glyphs can also be removed and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, like aegis and traits, are not swappable, and can only be recovered using an Upgrade Extractor or salvaging them with a Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets can be used to provide your hero with a variety of small, but useful, advantages. They can be acquired starting in the starter areas as loot, personal story rewards, from vendors, and through doing road interactions. They can also be made by jewelers, and then found or purchased from the Trading Post.

The first trinkets a player is able to unlock is the cloak, which grants a small, but valuable boost to movement speed and the ability to escape. The player will then be able to acquire rings, amulets and necklaces in a similar manner similar to how they obtained weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment comes with an upgrade slot that is either universal or jewel. Universal upgrades provide smaller bonuses and can be put into any kind of equipment while jewelry cannot be replaced or upgraded, and only works with certain types of trinkets.

These trinkets also provide additional buffs and skills that are active even when the character is not fighting. This lets the hero perform better when they are not active, and can also help fill in the void of a strong team or any slots from the talent tree which would normally be filled with hero's ideal statistics.

A good rule of thumb for trinket upgrades is to prioritize BiS (Best-in-Slot) items that you won't be replacing in the near future, then any items with desirable stats that are less important than the iLevel of the Item Upgrader kit being upgraded. This is especially true when an item has multiple stats that you'd like to upgrade as it's often better to upgrade just one important stat rather than two sub-optimal ones.

At the beginning of the game junglers will usually want to upgrade their trinket to a red in the middle and top players typically choose a green or pink ward (depending on the matchup). These choices will have a significant impact on the hero's abilities to control maps.

In addition to the items listed above, players will discover other trinkets in form of rewards and trophies throughout the game. These can be earned by completing certain milestones in the story. For instance, finishing the main quest of a chapter or defeating an opponent. These can be viewed by selecting the relevant achievement from the reward tab of the hero menu.
