When he heard the correct pronunciation and meaning of the word, he was rewarded with the object that went along with it.

She also taught Alex the meaning of words, not just the sounds. This was a revolutionary method because pet parrots generally only learn words to enhance their novelty. The owners don't really mean what they say when they use a specific word. Alex on the other hand, was referring to exactly what he said when he used a particular word.

Some scientists argue that it is unfair to compare Alex with humans in terms of intelligence. They argued that even though Alex could communicate, he was not capable of using logical expressions such as "if there is x, then there is y."

Alex's research into animal intelligence and consciousness is controversial. Until his death in 2007 at 31 years of age Alex was among the most well-known talking parrots in history.

What was Alex's personality?
