For a long time, Korea's scientific community has avoided engaging with creationists, afraid that doing so could increase the credibility of the movement. But silence is no longer an option.

The STR has been battling to remove content from textbooks that discuss evolution, such as the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an early bird's ancestor. But this is merely one aspect of the development paradigm's evolution.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a scientific theory that explains the evolution of the genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. The theory is based on fact that living things adapt to their environments, which can cause variations in genes or even complete genomes. Over the course of many generations these changes could result in the emergence of new species. The most popular theory of evolution is called natural selection, which describes the process that allows people with advantages survive and reproduce more frequently than those with less favorable characteristics. This differential reproduction can eventually lead to the creation and evolution of new species.

The term "evolution" is derived from Latin for revealing or unrolling, has been used in many different ways as the concept has developed in both science and elsewhere. Some early evolutionists, including Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that the existing species transformed into other species in a predetermined fashion. The term"transmutation" was coined by the Lamarck's disciple embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire to describe this notion. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833, attacked this idea and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the notion that species are evolving into new species in an orderly and predictable manner.

Evolutionary biologists define it more recently as a process through which living creatures develop traits to increase their chances of surviving or producing offspring. As time passes, genetic variation can lead a population to acquire new physical traits or biological functions. Natural selection is the main force behind the majority of evolutionary changes. However other changes that are not genetic, such as the growth in the muscle mass as a result of diet or exercise can't be considered to be examples of evolution because they are not inherited by future generations.

Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the tests of time and thousands of scientific experiments however, creationists have taken advantage of the notion that the theory is controversial to argue that it shouldn't be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists have won a few victories in their fight to remove evolution from high-school textbooks which includes the removal of any mention of the evolutionary roots of humans, as well as the Archaeopteryx, a feathered dinosaur thought to be an ancestral bird's ancestor.

The YECs are the best known type of creationist and they believe that God created the world exactly as described in the Bible. OECs are not as well-known however they're just as enthusiastic about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe and life on Earth are billions of years old and that evolution is an untruth.

Both types of creationism reject that scientific principles such as biogenesis and natural selection can explain how life started on Earth. They argue that evolution is inconceivable because it requires miracles. The pioneers of modern scientific thought shunned miracles because they feared they could lose their credibility.

Some creationists are able to accept naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and refer to their view "theistic evolution." This is sometimes also known as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from created kinds." This theory states that God creates original species and allows them to evolve over time. Eventually, these evolutionary changes will produce new species that are similar to the original ones.

Other creationists believe that God created the universe and all living things in one event, known as the Great Flood. They believe that the original species were created at the same time and that they grew slowly afterward. They also reject the idea of abiogenesis and claim that the self-replicating creation of organisms from nonliving matter is impossible.

In general, the creationists oppose the teaching of evolution in schools. This is a position that is backed by a myriad of professional associations such as the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education as well as the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Certain scientists and educational institutions, however, are more flexible and allow creationism and evolution to be incorporated into their curriculum.

What is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of the concept of creationism most often, they think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolution movement. The publishers of high-school textbooks announced last week that they would eliminate the mention of evolution in their books. A group dubbed the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research which is the driving force behind the campaign. The STR has scored its first victory by removing from textbooks the evidence of the evolution and ancestor of an bird, the Archeopteryx. It is now focusing on removing excerpts from Darwin's notorious finch research and on human evolution as well.

STR claims to have the support of around 4000 families and individuals. Its mission, it states, is to rid the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which paints an image of students as being negative. It also aims at countering the influence of American Creationists in the nation. A survey of students in biology revealed that half of them did not believe in evolution. The causes are not evident, but they could be due to religious beliefs or the absence of creation scientists in the United States.

The KACR has achieved a lot through its seminars and lectures in the past. It publishes a bimonthly magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of them is a textbook on the natural sciences with an evolutionary perspective that sparked interest in college communities. In 1991 the year 1991, a minister and professor began teaching Creation Science in one university and it continues to be taught to this day.

On August 6 and 7, 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. It was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish and 에볼루션 슬롯게임 Steven Austin spoke to audiences of over a thousand. KACR and its members have given lectures on creation science at major seminaries too. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
