Irene Pepperberg, an animal psychologist, purchased Alex in 1977 from a pet shop in the Northwest Side. She began an investigation lasting 30 years that would change our understanding of the intelligence of birds. What is Alex?

They argued that even though Alex could communicate, he wasn't proficient in using logic expressions like "if you do x, then y."

What was Alex like?

Alex was a fluent speaker when Irene Pepperberg saw him for the first time at the pet store. He could categorize and rename objects, and identify and request them. He could also express emotions, such as when he was bored or frustrated during training sessions. He would tell his trainers this by putting his chin on his cage, or saying loudly "I would like a banana."

Alex's intelligence is so advanced that he is able to understand and classify objects in terms of their colors, shapes and materials. He was also able to tell the difference between bags made of plastic and wooden box, and measure and compare the quantities of different objects. He even understood the concept zero, which humans usually don't grasp until they are around four years old!

What made Alex's abilities remarkable was the fact that, unlike other parrots, Alex truly understood what he was saying. He was able to utilize his more than 100-word vocabulary to describe ask and deny objects as well as communicate the dimensions and materials. He was able to comprehend the meaning of words and analogies however he was not capable of connecting them to their spoken language.
