The performance of a variety of Path of Exile items can be enhanced by upgrading the performance of them. They can be a good source of additional damage or more AD or even more affixes.

Often times however, upgraded Common and Magic gear is often surpassed by Rare-grade gear because of their high requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades are a kind of upgrade that can be applied to weapons and armor items. They improve the stats of the item upgrader mod they are attached to. Armor upgrades can be found in the world of the game and can be purchased from Blacksmiths at any bonfire. They can also be salvaged by using an expert or higher salvage kit to recover upgrades from the items.

The amount of damage an armored piece or weapon is able to absorb is dependent on the level of its upgrades. Upgrading a piece of armor to the highest upgrade level will increase the damage it absorbs. However, it's important be aware that this upgrade will increase its weight, causing it to be heavier than before.

There are several different types of armor upgrades that are available in the game. Each one has a distinct impact. For instance, certain upgrades give the armor a certain number of additional health points, while others make it lighter and stronger. The kind of armor upgrade an item will receive will be indicated by the name of the upgrade as indicated in the table below.

Certain upgrades require magic or a hybrid technology and magic, which is shown by the "Magic" and "Hybrids" entries in the table. Additionally, some upgrades require charges to use, which is identified by an "Charges" entry in the table below. The charges for these upgrades change daily or never expire, depending on the upgrade.

The cheapest method of upgrading armor is with Iron Ore, which can be obtained by exploring the area and looting chests of minor loot. The player must be aware, however, that upgrading a piece to the maximum upgrade level can boost its defense. However, it can also decrease the speed and agility of the piece. Therefore, it is typically not recommended to upgrade the majority of armor pieces that are higher than +9 since the added defense is typically not worth the extra weight and power cost of the improvements required.

Weapons

Weapon upgrades allow players to improve the effectiveness of specific aspects of an weapon. For instance, an upgrade may increase the damage dealt by shotgun shells or the accuracy of a rifle sniper. Certain weapons also come with enhancements that enhance their intrinsic qualities. Frictionless materials (improves stability, and reduces the risk of overheating) and Kinetic coils (increases the a stat and providing secondary effects. They can be created using a process called jewelry crafting, where you combine a gem with several chemicals at a table. The higher the grade of the gemstone, the better the secondary effect. These reagents can be obtained from Treasure Goblins and World Bosses in the world, or by finding Legendary Gear. You can also buy them from The Jeweler in exchange for Scattered Prisms and gold.

The quality of a gem can be improved upon by the Jeweler in stages that vary from Crude to Royal. The stat boosts can vary depending on the level the jewel is at when it's slotted into jewelry, weapons or other gear.

All tiers of jewels are crafted at the Jeweler and Jeweler's Workshop, with the exception of the rare and legendary jewels which require you to be at a certain level to qualify for the privilege of having them. Unlike other upgrade components, jewels can be swapped with another jewel of the same kind without damaging it. You can only replace the gem only once in a piece of equipment.

It is common to use more gems to enhance the appearance of. The jewels also improve performance and create a harder surface than steel so that repeated friction from pivots do not damage them.

A Glyphmaster can provide glyphs to enhance the look of your weapons and shields. These glyphs offer a small boost and can be freely traded, but they're not guaranteed to appear as loot. Trinkets can be used to give your character many small, but valuable advantages. You can find them in the start-up area as loot or personal story rewards. They are also available from vendors and by completing road interaction. They can be found on the Trading Post, or crafted by jewelers.

The first trinket that a player will be able to unlock is the cloak. It gives a small but valuable boost in speed of movement and evasion. Then, they can get amulets, rings, and necklaces in the same fashion to how the player acquires weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment has one upgrade slot that can accept either a universal upgrade or a jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades offer fewer benefits and can be put into any type of equipment, while jewelry cannot be replaced or upgraded, and only works with certain types of trinkets.

These trinkets provide additional buffs and abilities that are active when the hero isn't in combat. This allows the hero to perform better when they are not active, and can also help fill in the void of a solid team or the absence of any slots in the talent tree that would normally be filled with the hero's best stats.

A good general rule of thumb for trinket upgrades is to prioritize BiS (Best-in-Slot) items that you will not replace soon, followed by any items with desirable stats, but less important than the iLevel of the item to be upgraded. This is especially true if you're looking to upgrade several stats on an item upgrader kit. It's Best item upgrade to upgrade just one crucial stat rather than two suboptimal ones.

Jungle players will often upgrade their yellow trinkets to a red one prior to the beginning of the game. Mid and top players on the other hand they will select a pink or green ward, depending on the game's matchup. These choices will have a major impact on the hero's ability to control his map.
