Buying a Double Buggy From Birth

When it comes to choosing the ideal best double strollers buggy, there are many things to take into consideration. We spoke with Fourth Trimester postnatal retreat expert Katie Billingsley for her advice on everything from seating options, age ranges to folding mechanisms and storage space.

This buggy is essential for active families. It grows with you and your family, from twins to toddlers. It is light with great maneuverability and can handle uneven terrain with ease.

What style of buggy do want?

A double buggy is great for transporting two children, not necessarily of the same age, side by side. They can also serve as prams. Each seat comes with an adjustable mechanism so that your children can lie down or sit in various positions. Many have ample storage for everything from snacks and drinks to nappies and wipes. They are often lightweight, fold easily, and small enough to fit in the car boot. If you're someone who drives a lot, it's worth checking the buggy's maneuverability using the folded wheels, and also to get out and back into your boot.

You may have seen this kind of double buggy on other mums strollers, or even in one as a child. These are great for older siblings who want to keep up with you or for twins. They usually have many seating configurations (including "cinema" seats) for your toddlers to choose from. These are usually easy to navigate, and if you opt for a model with a soft suspension, they are able to easily navigate the kerbs.

Tandem buggies, which are easier to turn than side-by-sides are also popular. The second seat is placed behind the first rather than on top. The seats are usually wider and bulkier than a side-by-side and you must ensure that they will fit through doors or on public transport. They can be used to transport twins, a toddler, a baby or three children by the addition of a buggy board.

Lastly there are the'single-to-double' convertibles which can be used as a single pushchair twin from birth then convert to a double by attaching a second seat, carrycot or car seat to their clever frame. They're more expensive than tandem buggies or side-byside buggies, however they provide the flexibility of a single buggie and a very high cost of resale. They're generally easy to steer, come with a huge storage basket and can handle uneven surfaces. Some models even come with an integrated ride-on board that can be used as 'cinema seating' for your child's older.

Do you have twins?

Double buggys are the ideal method of transporting your children, regardless of whether they are twins or older siblings. There are two primary types of double buggy - side-byside buggies that let your children sit together, and tandem buggies where one child is higher than the other. Both can be fitted with two fixed seats, however side-by-side buggies tend to be narrower in size to fit through doors. Tandems acally larger than a single pushchair, and are difficult to maneuver up and down kerbs. Tandem buggies provide a more compact alternative, with one seat in the front and one in the rear, but they can still be large and heavy to push.

Convertible double buggies are fantastic because they let you convert your stroller into a dual buggy by simply attaching an infant car seat or bassinet to the frame. This way, you can keep your infant snuggled in their car seat until they're ready to move into the main buggy seat.
