Lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen is let go and replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is a more natural frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a needed boost.

The band released Mindfields in 1999 and goes on a huge tour around the world. After several weeks in Europe the band travels to Japan for sold-out shows. After a brief break, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album, Absolutely Live in 1993. This includes a cover version of Weezer’s song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's coverage of Africa during their recent tour. Toto's touring lineup includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest along with keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.
