The upgrade feature for items allows players to increase the level of equippable weapons or armor. This improves the effectiveness of the gear, as well as sometimes adding buffs or rerolling an affix.

Any item upgrader NPC can be located in the game. Generally, these NPCs are located in capital cities or major questing spots. You can also find upgrades for items by visiting dungeons that have high-level bosses and talking to NPCs in the garrisons of your faction.

The system of upgrading items in World of Warcraft provides players with the ability to upgrade the level of armor, weapons and trinkets. This process is very similar to the process used for gear reforging in Mists of Pandaria and Warlords of Draenor however, instead of using the currency appropriate to the task players must visit an item upgrader NPC to complete the process.

This can be useful to get higher scores on items that have already been upgraded, but could be a waste of time and resources.

Requirements

The process of upgrading items that are equippable such as weapons, armor and trinkets is to increase the item level. This improves their effectiveness and makes them more effective in battle. Each upgrade increases the stats of the item by to a certain extent and also offers the chance of obtaining an additional substat. The additional substat is randomly assigned, and can vary from a slight increase in one stat to an even greater boost in another. It is best to concentrate on the most effective items in the slot first, as they'll provide a greater return for your investment.

Rewards

The upgrading of items rewards players with currency and a range of items. In addition, each upgrade has a chance to grant a random extra stat bonus. This process uses Growthstones and Sollant, but there is a ten percent chance to obtain an item upgrader kit that is fully upgraded in only one cycle of growth. The more levels that an item gains, the higher its stats will be and the more items can be upgraded.

Upgrade components can be slotted into weapons, armor, and trinkets to provide an attribute bonus or extra effect when the equipment is in use. Some upgrade components also come with cosmetic effects. Upgrade components can be acquired through crafting, purchasing from vendors or the Trading Post, looting or receiving as a gift. Players can also find upgraded items using an Upgrade extractor, or salvage with a high tier salvage kit. Glyphs that are placed in tools for gathering are able to be swapped out without restrictions.

The player can transform an item into a different upgradeable item by selecting it and pressing the green button with an arrow for reroll. This will alter the layout and allow players to choose up to six items to be used for "recycling". The item will be replaced with an item of level 1. Recycled items don't keep their status or the amount of resources used to upgrade them.

An item's maximum upgrade level is determined by its tier and quality. Rare and Epic items are able to be upgraded to levels of nine, while common items can only be upgraded to level six. Item upgrades are added to the item's base statistics and will no longer increase after a certain amount.
