Mesothelioma Asbestosis

Mesothelioma and asbestosis are caused by exposure to asbestos. Both are long-term health issues. Mesothelioma, a cancerous condition, is different from asbestosis.

A biopsy is the primary method of diagnosing pleural mesothelioma. Doctors collect a small portion of pleural tissue and study it under microscope.

Symptoms

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that affects the thin layer of tissue surrounding organs. It can be caused by exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is composed of mineral fibers, which are naturally occurring. It was used to create a variety of products like brakes, insulation and flooring. When asbestos is disturbed, it releases tiny fibers into the air. If these fibers are inhaled they may cause irritation to the stomach or lungs. Mesothelioma occurs when cells in the affected tissue begin to grow in a different way and then transform into tumors. Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that can be found in both females and males.

The symptoms of mesothelioma vary depending on the location and stage of the cancer. The most commonly reported symptoms are breathing difficulties and chest pain. Other symptoms include fatigue, abdominal pain and fever. Mesothelioma can take between 20 and 60 years to develop following exposure to asbestos, and symptoms typically don't manifest until the disease has advanced to the later stages. This lengthy latency time is one of the primary reasons why patients are misdiagnosed.

First signs of pleural cancer include chest pain, difficulty breathing and a cough. As the cancer grows it can result in fluid buildup that irritates the lungs, causing chest wall pain, coughing fatigue, and weight loss. Fluid buildup may also occur in the abdomen (abdominal mesothelioma) or around the heart (pericardial mesothelioma).

As the disease progresses, symptoms become more severe and spread to other areas of the body. Peritoneal mesothelioma may cause abdominal pain and affect digestion. The mesothelioma in the pleural region can extend to the chest wall, diaphragm and the heart, causing lung problems.

Doctors can diagnose mesothelioma by taking a tissue sample called a biopsy. They will look for abnormal cells and determine the type of mesothelioma: epithelioid, biphasic or sarcomatoid mesothelioma. Epithelioid is by far the most prevalent mesothelioma that accounts for 70%. It responds best to treatment. Sarcomatoid mesothelioma is a less favorable prognosis, and is harder to treat. Biphasic Mesothelioma is distinguished by epithelioid (epithelioid) and sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) cells. It is seen in 40% of patients. Surgical treatments are most effective in earlier stages of the disease.

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of mesothelioma is determined by a combination of tests, including blood tests and imaging scans. The test results are used to determine whether there are mesothelioma tumors present and help doctors decide on the most appropriate treatment option for each patient.

The first step to diagnose mesothelioma is for a doctor to conduct a a physical examination and ask about their previous exposure to asbestos. Those who have been exposed to
